How the discount calculator works

All the maths runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Percent off

Sale price = Price × (1 − Discount ÷ 100) You save = Price − Sale price

Example: $80 with 25% off is 80 × 0.75 = $60.00, a saving of $20.00.

Double discount

Final price = Price × (1 − D1 ÷ 100) × (1 − D2 ÷ 100) Total discount = 1 − (1 − D1 ÷ 100) × (1 − D2 ÷ 100)

Example: $80 with 25% off and then 10% off is 80 × 0.75 × 0.9 = $54.00. That is 32.5% off in total, not 35%.

Sales tax

Total = Sale price × (1 + Tax ÷ 100)

Example: $54.00 with 8% tax is 54 × 1.08 = $58.32.

Comparing two offers

You pay = Cart − Discount + Shipping Break-even cart = Amount off ÷ (Percent off ÷ 100)

An offer only counts when the cart reaches its minimum spend; otherwise you pay the full cart plus the regular shipping cost. Example: on a $60 cart, 15% off with free shipping costs $51.00, while $10 off with $5.99 shipping costs $55.99, so the percent-off offer saves $4.99.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the price by one minus the discount as a decimal. For 25% off $80: 80 × 0.75 = $60, so you save $20.

Is 20% off plus another 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. Stacked discounts are applied one after the other, so the second one is taken off the already reduced price. 20% then 10% is 1 − (0.8 × 0.9) = 28% in total: $100 becomes $72, not $70.

Which is better, a percent off or a fixed amount off?

It depends on your cart. Divide the amount off by the percent as a decimal to get the break-even cart: 15% off beats $10 off once your cart is over $10 ÷ 0.15 = $66.67. Shipping and minimum spends can change the answer, so use the Compare two offers tool for your own cart.

Is sales tax added before or after the discount?

This calculator adds tax to the discounted price, which is how a store’s own coupon code is usually treated. Rules differ between states and countries, so check the total at checkout.
